Hello everybody,
I am currently restoring a 1945 Case VAI industrial tractor. I got it running about a week or so ago and took it for a spin and noticed something odd. When you push the clutch in the tractor completly stops like a brake. Every manuel transmission i've ever seen coasts when you push in the clutch to shift. I was wondering if this being a 4 speed industrial madel if its is different? I am new to this so any help or advice would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

Are you sure there isn't a brake dragging? Does the tractor roll freely when it is out of gear with the clutch out? How about out of gear with the clutch in?

On your VAI and many other Case tractors the clutch pedal pivots on the brake shaft.
Most likely your clutch pedal needs greasing at this pivot point. When you push the clutch in it is rotating the brake shaft making the brakes engage. It should have a grease fitting. You will need to make sure it moves freely at this pivot point. If greasing doesn't free it up try penetrating oil and keep working it.
Good luck and let us know if this works. Nick

It does roll freely when in the neutral position. I have pushed it in and out of the garage a couple of times. I am wondering if maybe industrial 4 speeds were different back then?thabks for the help.
