David Brown 990 PTO busted

Some time ago I was bushogging in some tall weeds. I ran over a large bundle of weeds that the bushog had accumulated. I should have lifted the bushog to clear this bundle but didn't. As soon as the bushog got on top of this clump of weeds, the tractor choked down, the bushog sheer pin did not shear, and I heard a loud pop underneath me from something breaking under the hydraulic cover down there somewhere.Immediately the PTO stopped turning. It will still turn when the bushog is not hooked up, but it travels in and out and rattles some. I haven't had time yet to do any diagnostic work so I was just wondering if any of you guys would like to hazard a guess as to where I should start looking and what to remove to get to it. Thanks heaps.

Remove top plate [top link housing ] depends on model you will have access to look at gear train. post back if implimatic or selectamatic tractor as there is removal and assembly procedures start there. post photo. max

I believe the trans. is called a selectomatic. It has a high range and a low range with 4 forwards and a reverse in each one. There might be 3 or 4 ranges like my D.B.995 has, but I can't remember. I'll look in the morning.

The transmission type is irrelevant. 3 choices as to what happened;

1. destroyed clutch disk, either ripped hub out of it or it came apart.

2. Twisted the end of the cardan shaft. This is the solid steel shaft with splines that goes from the clutch disc to the PTO box at the rear of the tractor. This has my vote for most likely.

3. Crashed the PTO box, the box has 2 shafts with sliding gears on one of them. You can usually see into a 990 box by removing the top link sensing unit. Look for a broken gear or shaft inside.

Thanks RG. This old 990 has been one of the most dependable tractors I ever owned. The only trouble I ever had out of it before this was the rear lift acting strange, which I have been told is a characteristic of this particular tractor.

Characteristic of one that needs the hydraulic fluid and filter changed.
