MY good friend Howard Meeks of Fort Benton, Mt, passed away Nov. 5 at age 97. I have known Howard for around 25 years; we met by accident. One Saturday another friend and I were cruising the countryside looking for old iron and as we approached one place I said that there was an L Case sitting next to the shop building. As we went by, we noticed someone working outside so we backed up and went up and introduced ourselves. We became friends right away when Howard and I confessed our love for Case.
He told us the L was his and that he intended to restore it (which he did). He also restored an LA plus he had a 600, a 1030, a 2470, a David Brown 990 and one other Case utility tractor plus two 1660 combines.
About 17 years ago, he and a nephew leased a section of land from the State of Montana and planted wheat. The next summer he tuned up the 1660's and used them to cut part of the crop along with the nephew's Gleaner. He invited me out on Saturday of that week and turned one of the machines over to me. What fun that was, harvesting with that great old machine.
