1170 injection pump

My 1170 was smoking white for a while. I cracked each injector line at the pump and found 1 injector not working. Smoke went away and the engine never changed its tune. Put new injectors in it, and same smoke. Cracked the lines and the same injector is the problem. Thinking the pump might have an internal leak. Does this sound like it could be the problem?

I have seen this problem with this type Bosch pump on Case and John Deere tractors alike. The barrel Will"slip" In the body of the pump. Look at the dowel pins under the cover. You will see the one that is smoking has the pin pushed outward. You will need to pull the barrel out and tap the dowel back in. Make sure the slot in the barrel lines up with the pin. When the barrel turns in the case it throws off the fuel delivery amount, but mostly the timing on that one cylinder. Thats where the the white smoke comes from. Good luck Al

Best check the compression, #1 has a problem. Anytime the smoke stops on a cylinder when the fuel is taken away with the line loose then starts up again with the line tight means there's a loss of compression heat. Pump is doing it's job..

Air increases in temp as it is being compressed. The air temp goes down if it is being decompressed. If the piston moves down too far before fuel injection takes place, the air has cools too much to ignite the diesel fuel mist. The white "smoke" is fuel mist that has experienced high pressure at the injector orifice but did not ignite.

To check for a compression leak, crank the engine with the fuel off. If it spins faster during one cylinder's compression then all the other cylinder's compression, that indicated air is escaping from one cylinder during its compression stroke. If the compression check out okay, the problem is probably late injection due to a malfunction within the injection pump---such as Al explained.
