1194 final drive

Ok, rookie mistake. During disassembly i half dropped a couple pieces and can't figure out which way they go!

Was replacing the right real wheel seals in the final drive on my 1194, pulled the short shaft with the wheel flange out no problem. On that shaft, behind the seal housing, there's a tapered roller bearing and race. Does that bearing go "cone in" (small end towards the rear end), or cone out (small end towards the wheel)? looking at how the preload is adjusted with shims under the seal housing I figure it has to go "cone in", but at this point I can say Im thinking striaght, I think I sweated all my common sense out about an hour ago...

BTW, I have the IT Shop Manual and it has the same lo-rez picture as the Messick exploded parts drawing, both only show the bearing and race as unit so it's impossible to tell from those.

OK, answering my own post, for the record. After reviewing the reassembly instructions a few time and rethinking the preload steps I realized that the outer cone has to be installed small end out. The inner bearing has to go small end in, so since they use the seal housing to establish the preload the out bearing has to sit the opposite way.

Thanks Den. I had those pictures, and you're exactly right - not enough detail in them to tell what I needed to know, impossible to tell which the bearing (#20 in the picture) was installed. It's all back together now, so if the wheel doesn't falloff I'l assume I got it right! :D
