480 ck injection pump update

Hi guys. I took the inspection plate off the side of the pump and fuel came out. I had to shut the fuel off to stop it from flowing out. Is this normal? With the fuel turned off I turned over the engine
and the pump is definitely spinning. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Case Nutty. The pump is spinning. I put the plate back on, turned on the fuel, cranked is for a long time, and still no fuel from the pump to the injectors. I took off all of the injector lines. I next took off the top plate and made sure that the fuel shut off valve in the pump was not stuck shut, and it was not. It moved properly and all linkages appeared properly connected and working. I put the top plate back on, and cranked it for a long time, several times, and still no fuel out of the injector lines.

At this point, I am just going to have to take the pump off and have an expert look at it/rebuild it. It appears that the pump is not creating any pressure at all.

Thanks to you, and everyone else.

Of course, before I tackle this job, if anyone else has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks to all.

if you are gonna pull the pump, get flywheel timing in sync 1st with injector pump.., best I recall stop engine around 4 degrees btdc/?? using pointer on the bell housing ,.. check the alighnment line on fuel pump at small plate where fuel flowed thru , all lines should line up before you pull the pump ..you will headaches ahed when you put it back together ,,,btw,,. did you try cranking motor with fuel cutoff cap off and observe any fuel ??

Thanks. Yes, I read about the timing issues in the shop manual that I have and it highlights that issue in Bold and Highlighted text. There is fuel in the pump, and getting to and into the pump, but it is not pumping it out to the injector lines.

Check the return line and make sure its open, seems like after you had the top off the fuel would have primed up, if this was plugged, but you never know.

Thanks again Case Nutty. The return line was fine and unplugged. I spoke with an older retired mechanic and he agreed that everything that you guys mentioned was the perfect advice and the right things to do. He will look at this for me, and if cannot get it to work, he will take it out properly, have it rebuilt and reinstall it. The pump just seems to have died. He charges $40/hr. Not too bad, but the rebuild will be $500 plus, I am sure.

Seymour ind ,, interstate fuel injection is the BEST and the lowest price in these parts , and they ship too...

Dieseltech was talking about this problem on another post, he said he has had many with a sticky plunger.

He is a good asset to this board and it would be good to use him if possible, he gives freely of his time and info and probably gets not a lot in return.

Just got home from the Portland Indiana swap meet, saw your update. I suspect you have stuck internal parts similar to the JD 4010 I just repaired. If you like my E-mail is [email protected] if you have more specific questions, be glad to visit.
