Can anyone explain to me how to lign up TDC on a 990. I see holes on the side of the flywheel housing but cannot see in there as I turn the engine. What letter should the fuel pump marks be on when I reach TDC?

Which engine does it have, AD4/47 or 4/49, front gears for pump drive was changed. Both engines the pumps can be removed/replaced long as the pump mark and case mark are lined up. The 47 pump has a quill drive shaft with a wide spline to only go back one way. The 49 is marked the same but the drive gear has a locating pin that enters the drive hub, three bolts fasten gear to hub like some Perkins and Ford. If the battery ground is pulled off so engine is not turned, the 49 pump can be removed/replaced like the 47 but the gear may jump teeth with the pump off. My book gives no pump letter, and some pumps did not have the snap ring set for timing anyway.

well I wanted to see which letter on the inside of the pump would also be up at tdc just in case I needed to rerefernce. TDC seems hard to read through the small ports on the flywheel housing. I think my only real problem is metering valve stuck from sitting, I am trying to use solvent and air and light tapping for now but if that fails I want to pull pump and disassemble.

You put a rod down the hole, it lines up with a hole in the flywheel to lock it in place. One hole should be marked for TDC the other is for spill cut off (i.e. the point that fuel injection commences)
As said before, the fuel injection pump has a master spline so can be removed/replaced with out prior setting of the motor. The fuel injector pump also has a line scribed on it's mounting flange and so has the cylinder block to bolt it up in the right place on the slotted holes.
If you dismantle the pump you will need to reference the letter lining up with the circlip through the inspection plate on the pump.

Thanks, I been gone a couple days. I saw the holes in the flywheel but just cannot turn the engine and hold anything in the TDC hole at the same time. I am sure my metering valve is stuck and I have been spraying with pb blaster and blowing air into it with no success.
