Replacing Hyd Pump Bevel Drive Gears, 20-2290 and Others

Replacing these gears normally requires splitting and removing final drive housing or removing the cab to access top trans cover plate. Before doing that again I wanted to see if I could remove the gears without going through all that work. Having no way to pull the gear with brgs. I went to work and drilled and tapped the short PTO shaft that it is splined into it and attached a slide hammer. Them degreased the splines on the shaft and internal splines in the gear. Applied JB Weld to the splines and assembled the parts and left them sit for 24 hr. Tried the slide hammer this afternoon and pulled the gear and brgs. out. Yes it takes some time to do it this way but will save a day or two labor and Mr. Farmer was very pleased with the savings. Maybe someone else has another method of removal that works also. I am happy with this method and the work it saved, Rod.

We have changed many of those thru the years. We take the side plate off the right side above the shift levers. That lets us drive the one out backwards and we also work thru the rear with the pto removed. The slide hammer idea looks good also. Thad

Thad that sounds like a good idea. I have only fixed a couple of these before and in both I found evidence of more problems when the PTO housing was removed so I split them. This PTO shaft needed to be replaced anyway, the bushing end is worn badly. Now I have a special tool to use on the next one and removing those gears should be a piece of cake,LOL. Rod.

I looked at a few 2090's this summer, but didn't buy one, at how many hours do these gears usually need replacing and is there a way to tell that they are close to stripping?

Yes, I use the guys cheater method also. I thought I remembered pulling the hyd. Pump and charge pump also?? But it's been awhile. I talked to a guy this year that took his 2294 to a Case IH dealer for this problem. They did it by the book, removing the cab etc. The bill was over $10,000, I don't know what they all did.

Your right Eric. the gear that drives the pumps is aways damaged when the other one is so they have to be removed also, Rod.

I guess i'm more daft today than normal

May i ask why you jb welded the parts to the splines?

Do you have a picture?

That way the shaft stays stuck to the gear and the slide hammer is attached to the shaft, this is shown in a pic. After the gear is pulled out with the shaft a little heat needs to be applied the the gear so the JB Weld softens and they can be easily pressed apart. Rod.

Hello Rod, have done as you posted however I am not sure how to remove the shaft that runs the pump

1370Rod.........how does the next shaft come out. The one that sits in front of the gear that holds the woodruff key. We were able to get the rear shaft out, bearing, and 90 degree gear. But the front shaft is now in the way of the other 90 degree gear. Thanks in advance.

I believe that is a short shaft and will pull straight back with out much resistance.
