A neighbor has a case 430 diesel he might sell. It needs a water pump, radiator leaks, brakes and pto don't work. What would it be worth? It has good tires, about 50% tread good paint straight metal. It has , I think, an independent PTO. It has the long lever behind the seat, also is a triple range. How bad is the pto to fix? And are parts available? It was his Dad's tractor for about 30 years. Dad died several years ago and the boy (50 yrs old) doesn't keep anything repaired. As long as they run, he runs them. His Dad had several good old tractors and they are parked for lack of maintenance. A 4000 Ford diesel and a Super M Farmall and one or two more.

Sounds like someone who is always short of cash. Unless you really really desire then 430, I'd low ball the offer, who knows if fluids were EVER changed or checked. In addition to the problems you are aware of what else is looming. jmo gobble

I don't think they ever change anything. The old man was really up on keeping things up, but it didn't transfer to the younger generation. He left a late model Kubota and it hardly is usable now.

Based on that description, I would walk away unless I could buy it at salvage value. Who knows what you will find.

That being said...I never seem to be able to follow that advice, and always end up regretting the "deals" that no one else wanted.

I think I would start with an offer around $2,000. It could have engine problems from running low on coolant.
