Case 430 diesel, injection timing

I have a 1966 430 Diesel. It runs good, starts good, does not use or leak oil but it always smokes blue a bit. Unburnt fuel smoke, not oil. I realize this could be anything from worn out nozzles, lower then normal compression, weak IP etc... but in past tinkering I found out that as pumps wear, the injection time also slowly retards with it. And with retarded timing, blue smoke is often present. Can I safely turn the pump a bit to increase the timing to see what happens? Which way would I turn it? Its a rossa master pump.
The tractor is way older then I am so I really don't know if that's what tractors/diesels of that era did even when they were new. Was it?

One more note, DO NOT move the pump to change timing with engine running like a gas distributor! The pump may have a head/rotor seizure, and also break the drive shaft. Engine must be off whenever pump is moved..
