Proto type tk 1200??

i have a case tk 1200 that i dont know to much about and was wonder what you tractor experts might know about it. think that its a 1964 but not sure cause the serial number doesnt match anything around there and havent been able to find another one with the same cab or set up. pretty sure it has a cummins 451 turbocharged diesel with a 3 speed hi and low trany. thats about all i know about it so far so if anyone has any other information it would be greatly appreciated.

It is a 1964 model built at the Rockford plant, that is why the serial is different very early ones were built there. as for the engine it came with a Case 451 turbo'ed engine not a Cummins, I have seen people do a transplant, the six speed was in most 1200's only last year 1200 had a 8 speed, the pic above is mine a few serials later than yours, yours and mine I call "pre production" units not proto-types but just units made and sent out for customer testing to make sure everything was right before full production started. they made three 1200 test/proto-types before the "test" run ones like mine and I am guessing the one you have as well, you can ordered a build card to get a build date, mine was available yours may ne as well, no 1200 was shipped with a cab, the Crenlo cab on mine in the pic was a "Case factory Cab" but this cab was not available until later then installed, seems to me 65 or 66 is when the Crenlo cab went into production, I contacted Crenlo and they give me a build date but I have lost that e-mail, hope this gives you a bit of info on your 1200

Steve, my info says they made 10 units, sent them out, kept a close eye on them and 30-60 days main production started, the first three units had the axle type like the CASE 4wl drive loaders had but with it different style u-joints for tighter turning did not hold up under the steady loading the 1200 gave them, they also found with the 10 units they had a oiling problem that they recalled and fixed, I am sure there was other things that showed in testing, you have to remember this was a mostly new area they were in, I feel if they had put the 8 speed in at the beginning the 1200 would have sold far more units as the speed changes are to great with the six speed and the 451 "30" series engine did not respond well to turboing and just does not have the ponies it needed, the 1470 fixed all the issues the 1200's had, even so the 1200 really did make a name for CASE in the plains states

Tom did all 1200's have the down and under exhaust from the factory?

yes Rod they did, they also were all 4wl steer unlike its later brothers 1470 and 2470, I do not know if the 2670 and 2870 could have two wheel only

thanks for the info it was good to know some more about it. so did they make all the pre productions in Rockford cause as you can see mine has printed on it the Racine plant? and do you know if the cab is just a later model that was put on or just from something else?

Case had or have there main office in Racine, that is why that is on the serial plate, your serial block was Rockford, as for the cab it is a aftermarket built unit, I have seen that one several times not sure of the brand right now, Hinsen, Year Around, Egging, Ansel, Hinker, are a few that come to mind right now, maybe someone else will know it for sure

I ran one of the first 10 1200s for a farmer in SD.
Broke a crankshaft in fall of 1964 case gave us a
diffrent 1200 the next day Tried to get a build card
on 1200 9801842 a6 speed which we own NO card
avaible

so is there a best way to find out what style u-joints are in them? if its like the case loaders or just the original pre-production style? since the pre-production are pretty rare would that make a big difference in price? what would the average price range be?

they only put the loader joint in the first three, and if they sold them after the testing they would have swapped that out as they found them failing while still testing the machines, as for extra money that is debatable, if it was the first production one,,, maybe a bit more, main thing to me is condition on these units, I have seen them sell for scrap to beyond 5000.00 for the right equipped ones even more, I think mine is neat due to the early serial but time will tell if the early ones bring a few more $$

Sorry to dragging this old thread back up again but thought it was the most appropriate place. I have a 1964 1200tk here in Ireland that came from Michigan. Its serial no is 8229944. While I was visiting the US in Aug/Sept I came across another one in Clarion in Iowa. It was serial no 8229961, only a few digits away from my own one.
