new to me 430 questions

Well i've got my first tractor home now and have gone over it and once it gets a good degreasing, tune up and maintenance will start. I hope someone can answer a few questions for me until i get a manual though.

1. It has what i think is a factory case loader. Its working, but i was still able to put 5gals of fluid into the right tower, and there's room for more. It appears to be plumbed into the reservoir under the gas tank as well. There is a pump on the front of the engine driven by the crank. Is this the only hydraulic pump or is there another for the 3pt?

2. Can i determine year based off engine SN? Its a gas sn 2659202. The tag on the dash is missing. It has two cylinders for power steering.

3. The "transfer case" has three positions, ? N ?, would this be direct drive & low? If so, what position is which?

4. It has a model 31 backhoe attached which I will be removing until spring, as I need to use a snowblower. It looks as if the subframe for it is welded to the tractor in spots. I will need to attach 3ph liftarms and draw bars, would anyone happen to have a pic of that setup? I'm not sure I have all the needed mounting points on the back axle tubes

Engine oil and trans oil is both like a vanilla milkshake, it'll be flushed. PTO brake & clutch to be adjusted, also no brakes.

I'm leaving town for a month and would like to do as much parts sourcing/info gathering as possible while I'm away

Thanks for the help!

A picture would help but it sounds like you have a 430CK Construction tractor if it has the 31 backhoe. If so, the loader should be a case loader. Three point won't be easy. If you take the backhoe off you will need to ad lots of rear weight? If it is a 430CK, you probably have a 4 speed transmission with a low and high range. Post a picture if you can. Dick, OR.

Some TLC and fresh paint should go along way! Surely someone here should have the answers to my questions!

That is a 430 farm tractor. Someone has scabbed on a Construction loader and backhoe? Looks like you have a PTO and rockshaft for the hitch arms. You need the three point arms and lift linkages plus the axle mount clamps for your lower lift arms to attach to the axles. If you dont't have a manual and parts book for your 430 you need to get them. There are books on E-Bay or a manual can be gotten from John external_link. The parts book will show you what your missing for the lift arms. There is usually some lift arm parts on E-Bay. You may have two shift levers, standard 4 speed in center between your legs and another lever on the right side of transmission. The lever on the right can be a low and high or a low, med and high triple range shifter. Not sure if you can leave loader on and install the factory 3 point lift arms. Someone else might chim in with their thoughts? Dick, OR.

Thanks for response Dick. For some reason, one of your responses is only viewable in classic mode, which is terribly confusing

I have the lift arms and linkages, i guess it's just the axle clamps missing.

Hope someone else can chime in and answer my other questions also, TIA

That tractor appears to be a 440 Ag/utility tractor that had been highly modified. That whole set up with the loader and backhoe is more than likely from a badly damaged 530ck that was beyond repair for some reason and retrofitted to your 440. Your tractor is a draft-o-matic 3 point which is reserved for ag tractors. There should be a stud out of where the axle housing and trans meets on both sides that has a cast piece that locks the 3 point arm. That uses 2 of the 4 holes on the axle housing. The other 2 holes is where the sway chains hook. Total of 4 cast pieces and 4 stud points. 530ck tractors with 31 loader/backhoe generally did not have 3 point nor remotes. The front crank driven pump would be isolated from the tractor supplying the loader and hoe. Your 440 has a pump in the trans housing originally to run remotes and the hitch. Don't know what to tell you why it runs into the valve body of the tractor. Your tractor could be dual range, or triple range. See if there is a L D H stamped in the casting next to the lever. L= low D= direct H= high. When tractor is running you can monkey with it and find out. Milky engine oil is a very bad sign, and just flushing it isn't going to help If you have a blown head gasket, cracked head or leaky liner o-rings. Check coolant and see if there is any signs of oil. You have your work cut out for you. Take your time and you should be fine.

Thanks for the input Zach, I think the oil was milky from water entering the exhaust and rain/snow melt as it sat for a few years, coolants okay, and since I changed the oil so far so good after a few heat cycles.

I'll have to draw out a diagram of the hydraulics in hopes of figuring it out.

Thanks for clearing up the link arms for me, here is its current setup, I hate to ask, but i'm sure this is not acceptable to handle the weight of a blower, or maybe it's common practice? My gut says no

Its defiantly only two range, just not sure which position is what

I have a real act for getting myself involved in frankenstein projects and other peoples hack jobs, maybe someday i'll learn :?

If I get home tonight before it gets dark I'll take some pictures of the 3 point set up on a 530 I'm working on for you.
