the fella I take hay to has a 970 power shift that was parked perhaps 3-4 yrs ago , back then , he said he thought the motor was seizing up,,. although the motor ran and started fine just before it seized,, now he doubts the motor is the problem but perhaps a tranny issue ,, however the starter will not crank the motor ,.. I suggested take the starter to a rebuilder ,,. but he thinks he mite as well split the tractor because the tranny is the problem.. I advised him to hold his horses til he figured out for sure what was wrong . ,, my ?, will a p shift lok up a engine to where it could not crank or turnover ? .. if so is their a procedure to lok out the tranny ? while the engine was started ..?

If I were him I would see if the engine can be turned from the starter opening, If not, he has an engine problem in all likely hood, However the Powershift could lock it up if there was a drastic failure of the planetary .

It is hard to diagnose from long distance but generally if the powershift is locking down from 3 clutches being engaged it will start and run momentarily till transmission pressure is obtained then stall quickly.

I would want more info as 3rd party stuff can get messed up and vital info lost especially since it has been parked for a while.

If it was running when originally parked I would verify if the starter system was ok before anything else. I would not split it without eliminating the other thing first.

thanx mEl ,, nuthin better than good advice ,,. stay tuned ,, I wanna help this falla get his tractor goin again ..

Dumb question:
Can the springs on the torque limiter be relaxed or removed to disconnect the engine from the transmission without splitting the tractor?

No, no access to the flywheel area.
