VAC-14 Carburetor Woes

After cleaning all ignition/electrical contacts it seems I now have consistent spark. Tractor starts every time now (fingers crossed). I truly don't know what corrected the problem.

Now, it seems the only way it will idle down is with the idle screw turned ALL the way in. And at that it idles rough. Do you suppose there is a clogged passage somewhere after sitting eight years? This carburetor is not real easy to remove.

Thanks,
Glenn F.

I believe that turning the idle needle in makes the mixture richer. One of the tiny holes in the throttle bore above the venturi (where the throttle plate touches the wall of the bore when it is closed) may be plugged, causing a lean condition. These holes can get covered by a layer of varnish and are easy to miss when cleaning.

I usually remove the air cleaner assembly before the carb. Its only 2 nuts and a clamp to get it off. Nick

If it is a M&S carb probably a TSX114, Christopher is correct the idle mixture is air adjust, screwing all the way in is rich mixture. For smooth idle it would normally be screwed all the way in and backed off 1/4 - 1/2 turn if the carb is in good condition. You may have some shellac in the small orifices. The main nozzle has the smallest orifices and is most prone to restriction. I would do a teardown, cleaning and probably an overhaul kit in the carb on a tractor that has been laid up that long. Pic is main nozzle.

That depends on the configuration of the TSX carb you have.

If the high speed needle is located on the bottom as Pic 1 the main nozzle can be removed with the carb mounted.

One the most frequent factory carbs on the VA series is the TSX114 Pic 2. The high speed needle is on the top as shown in the pic 2 & 3, the halves of the carb must be separated to remove the main nozzle.
