Putting D motor back together

Will be installing pistons back in block tomorrow. Micked crank and measured rod bearings so I know exactly what shims to install. Had pistons and rods in once but could not acuratly get shims right. Pulled rods back out and done it right. Had to tear motor down due to water in oil. Done a valve job, replaced one valve. The culpert was the sleeve O Rings, two were deteriated. Dick, OR.

Chuck, I don't think he removed the sleeves. Don't see that cross thatched honing marks. I thought his original post said he was doing it all thru the inspection plates in the pan. Don't know now that he says he's doing it right????? gobble

I pulled the sleeves, could not install new O Rings otherwise?? Was some build up cleaned out all I could. I did hone the sleeves. Don't show up good in pics. Dick

Dick, thank you for correcting me. I've read your posts with keen interest as I have a couple that need renewed inside. Thanks for the pictures. So to get the correct clearances on the crank with the rod bearings, you shim the rod cap? Are the clearances and specifications spelled out in a shop/repair manual? Your using your original pistons and sleeves, are the ring sizes determined by the sleeve diameter. So many questions, I've never rebuilt one, and have a crazy desire to do at least the top end on a SC I have. thanks gobble

Very interesting. I had a 51 model D. It had the same problem. I didn't think I could afford to fix it. I sold it to another collector.

Tom, the SC uses precision non adjustable bearings as contrasted with the DC setup. You may want to check availability of bearing shells with Saeli or someone who specializes in this old stuff. I'm gonna stick my neck out and say the mains may be able to be rebilt with new babbit and resized if necessary bu don't be to hard on me if that is not fact.
