Tom,
On the 'D', I thought it would be an easy pull the pistons and pull the sleeves and re install them. The sleeves and pistons/rings looked good. I cleaned up the sleeves and honed them. There was hardly any ring ridge. I removed the rings and cleanwd them up along with the piston ring grooves. Had to be carefull in removing the rings so as to not break them. The parts book shows 24 shims on the rod caps, no shim size? I figured on just putting back in what came out. The bearings looked OK and I had decent oil pressure. A few shims were so bad that I could not tell how many was on each bolt. We miked the crank throws and with the rods on the bench we torqed them to the 70lbs and miked the bearings. Calculating the difference we determined what I needed for shims allowing for the speced clearance. Added the shims and retorqued the caps and re miked them. Ready to install today. I was working through the access holes in the side of the pan so it was hard to plastic guage the bearings. Hope that helps.Dick

Thanks Dick, that is about the approach I had in mind for my 52 SC, low oil pressure, smoking, lack of power. I found some info in my IT shop manual also. Let us know if your calculations prove to be correct. gobble

The SC does not have shimmed caps, they were conventional in design with inserts. wear cannot be taken up as D series can.

Tom, He is correct, the SC has different bearings!! My mistake, I just rebuilt my 50 SO a couple of months ago. It was a lot easier because I had the motor out and on a stand.
