Gas Tank Leak

Going to have to remove the gas tank from my VAC, appears to be leaking from where sediment bowl attaches to tank. Have read in past where some of you have lined or coated the interior of tank, was wondering what is used, and is it something I can do.?

Thanks, Mike

You can unscrew the sediment bowl and coat the threads with Teflon tape, and then reinstall the bowl. If the leak is from a rust hole in the tank, then drain the tank and examine it further. If the tank looks good inside, with only a few small rust spots, then you can solder the hole closed (after ensuring that there is no liquid or gaseous gasoline in it) and have a good repair. If large areas of the tank bottom are rusty or pitted, then a different tank may be in your future. I don't use fuel tank liners, I have heard the stories of too many people who have had problems with them in the long run.

I had a pin hole leak in the bottom of my VAC tank several years ago. Used this eastwood system to fix it. No issues in the years since. Also used the system on a generator tank and some Wheel Horse Garden tractor tanks. Messy and a bit time consuming but it worked well in all instances for me.

RedKote works great, last time I got it at NAPA.. Pour in roll around and pour out one step. I have used the two part before don't remember the bran name but it ruined may tank. It looked like cobweb inside.

Looked inside tank, clean as a whistle, no rust. Sediment bowl nipple sticks up inside tank about 3/4", and am considering putting small amount of tape on threads, only 3/8" to 1/2" up from bottom of nipple. Know what happens when a little piece gets in hydraulic valves - nightmare for sure, and don't want any problems with carb. Am getting carb rebuild kit from Saeli Imp. and redoing it too. Did find that sediment bowl valve is deteriorating from old age and is leaving small pieces in bowl. Perhaps tank is ok, and problem is really with sediment bowl assembly. Thanks for the help.

Hi Mike ,,, what I have done is poured redkote in the tank then secured it to the wheel of a tractor and drove around in low gear for about 5 minutes ,, , then I set the tank upside down on top of the rded kote can with the filler cap in the can ,, let acceses drain out for about 10 minutes,, then cap and seal for future use ,,, next set a lite bulb ibn the tank to improve setup time ,,the can says its ready for gas in 48 hours ,, imho ,, iwould keep thelite bulb on it a week to get a thourogh cure ,,.l

Do not use Teflon Tape.Gas eats it up very quickly.I use a paste called Blue Monster.Works on gases and liquids. Does not dry out like most sealers.
