Hello gentleman!! Several months ago you guys were very helpful With identify the model I have as well as a few other questions. Now I need some more advice please.

I have never used a bush hog. Today I decided to try out the bush hog that came with the tractor. I need some advice on engaging the PTO. Do I engage in neutral, in gear with clutch in, or in gear while going?

When I engaged the PTO, as soon as I release the lever, it disengages. The lever falls back down to the disengage position.

Thanks!

When you pull up the lever and you come to the point where it forms a straight line them push it away toward the tire and the it should be fully engaged. IF that don't work you may have a problem. There are gears to engage in there, no clutch. Do you have an operators manual?

I have a service manual, but no owners manual. I never found a manual on line that I was convinced was the right one. I will research that again.

I walked outside this morning and checked what you said to do about moving the lever over and it seems like that will do the trick. Thank you for the help!

Is this the type of PTO you have?

Or is it this one?

It looks more like the 1st pic. The lever is the same. I tried the method of moving the lever toward the right wheel once I pulled it up and it worked.

I really need to get an owners manual. It also has a hand clutch but I dont know how to use it. It would be nice if I could use it with the PTO engaged.

The function of the hand clutch is to engage/disengage the transmission for tractor ground travel. The engine clutch (foot) engages the drive shaft that powers the pto directly and also the transmission via the hand clutch. Ground travel is controlled by the hand clutch and has no effect on the pto. This is what Case calls a “constant running pto”.

Lets say you are using a rotary mower in high grass. As the mower loads up and starts to bog down, disengaging the hand clutch stops tractor ground travel allowing the mower to continue to run and clear at pto speed. Without the hand clutch you have to use the foot clutch to stop the tractor which would also stop the pto. Then put the transmission in neutral and restart the pto with the foot clutch again.

The hand clutch is handy for stopping with out the rotary mower's blade momentum driving you forward into a fence or some other disaster. It becomes natural to use after a short while.
