Case 430 wont engage

Hi, Im only 19 and have been operating with a 50 nearly 60 year old tractor. My older brother just purchased it a week ago, we got a day or two of real good work out of it. Im not a pro but after learning the sensitivity of the clutch and how the brakes and gas worked. I was doing some simple grading, moving fill and flattening the land.

I started hearing and feeling grinding, whenever I would try to go from forward to reverse it wouldn't let me in and I could feel it grinding when I tried to put it in a forward or reverse. I even occasionally felt it with the shifter (but I basically always keep it in first gear whats the point of 2 3 and 4 can anyone tell me?)

So the previous seller, had it for a very long time and has been more than helpfull. He helped us with changing all the fluids, we have done a full gear oil change (it was a milky creamy color and very low) And we have done a simple oil change. We have put in new hydraulic fluid also but im %100 sure that has nothing to do with it, we put it in, the backhoe worked we were done so thats a side note.

So why is it grinding and why cant we get into gear?

I can turn it off, set myself up to go forward or reverse then turn it back on and go, or atleast I used to be able too. Now when I even turn it off set it up and turn it back on I can hear the grinding. Its a tad deceiving sometimes because the motor causes the gas tank to vibrate against the hood but the transmission sound is very obvious and sounds pretty horrible.

I called a friend, he's from central USA so I dont know if you guy's have different lingo. He told me that one of these 3 are likely needing replaced

Clutch
Pressure Plate
Throwout baring.

He gave me a general idea of what they all do and basically that says to me that it is not properly disengaging and slowing up the gears for me to change things up internally.

I've spent a little less than 50 hours operating this machine and dont know how it all works, Ive spent less than 100 hours operating an actual manual vehicle in general. But Im pretty smart and my brother (the owner) is even smarter. So I know we can figure it out with your help.

So my basic knowledge tells me that something is not disengaging for me to re-engage what I need to engage to go forward reverse, shift from 1 to 2 or even get into 1 ect.

Its hard to find information on a tractor this old. Pretty sad too because I changed the spark plugs in 7 minutes, that would have taken me maybe 2 hours on my modern car. These old tractors are amazing machines with simple fix in mind it seems.

Can anyone help me out?

I think these are the specs

Case 430 backhoe (has the front bucket and the bag digger)

Model: G430 or C430 (I cant tell its kinda faded my first sight says G but it might actually be C
No. 8257405

Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!

I don't think it is any of the 3 possibilities your friend mentions. It would be good if it was, but I think your problem is deeper & more expensive. Your 430 has the Shuttle Shift (Forward-Reverse) Gearbox, and I'm pretty sure the teeth on the gears are stripped off.

What brings you to the conclusion that the gears are stripped? How can they become stripped within the first 2 day's of use? :?:

easily ,, if the gears were on its last leg before you got on it and no one warned you about the ailment, you are young like I once was ,,. same as john saeli ,,. make friends with him ,,, his family was a case dealer for 3 generations in the finger lakes region of N Y state .. he knows his stuff,,. and to be honest it sounds like you will need another tranny ..but I know nuthin about this type you have ,,. but I do know equipment and I know when things are failing too,, and judging from your description , oohhh nno ,,. good luck ,, btw ,, there are lots of salvage yds out there that will have what you need to make it good as new

Better listen to John.

John could well be correct, but first you need to adress the clutch issue. It needs to disingage so you can shift it into any of the gears, and then address the reverser issue. Does it pop out when you have it in gear? The vibration could be coming from a clutch disc that is coming apart; or bearings in the tranny.
Sounds like some major shop work anyway you look at it

We have a mechanic to come work on our bigger backhoe saturday morning, he's going to take a look at this little one ive been talking about. How much are we talking to replace the gears?
