DC pto question

I have a early 50's DC, Eagle Hitch, Live PTO.
just recently picked up a generic chopper. It works
on my DC, however when I shut off the PTO, it continues to 'coast'
at a low RPM. I must shut off the tractor to get it to completely stop.
Wish there was a 'hand brake' on the shaft.
So is this normal PTO action on a DC ? Thanks, C Kain

Yes, this is normal. There is no PTO brake. It could also be that your pto clutch is too tight, or that it was run too loose which caused it to overheat and warp the clutch plates. I just went through the pto clutch in my 1954 SC, so I know that it is in practically new working condition and adjusted correctly (it is the same as the one in a DC with a few less clutch plates). I have it hooked to a brush hog and the brush hog takes about 5 minutes to coast down after disengaging. Also, sometimes it never completely stops, but turns at less than 10 rpm. continuously. It will usually not start turning unless I engage it, or run the tractor up to full throttle. In any case it doesn't turn more than about 10 rpm unless it is engaged.
