The '53 DC my brother-in-law had was still babbitt. Never saw the inside of a '54, but was probably still babbitt and shims. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

A, what are you worried about the babbit for? I used them in a super stock DC with a turbo running 3rd gear with D sprockets for several years and never lost the babbit on a rod or loosened a main up. We were running extremely high RPMs for a DC and YES, we did have a steel flywheel made for it with a 3/8 X 6" wide steel band wrapped around the clutch housing.

You would be better to be concerned about ripping the rear main saddle out of the block! That is the weak point of the DC for serious power. Anything over 75 HP needs support in the block and requires some ingenuity.
