Pulling DC SC

Going to try pulling one or both at local
pull for the first time that being said
these tractors are farm stock and weight DC
has fluid in tires ok my question. First
or second gear? Thanks

most antique pulls limit 1st gear only ,,. definitely true for the Sc ,, unless you have one of the VERY few
'Hot"
SCs , imho, I would not risk embarrassment for CASE...but ,,THE DC ? now there is a Real Winner! , I have 4 trophies in1st place pulling and at least 10 in tractor games. hand crank start.ect...//..when I pulled fully fluided Pops 51 DC in 2nd,,. it was impressive. and it placed 4th in a field of a dozen . quikly learnt that the sled was not a 3 bottom plow ... weight the front about half as much as you do the back as a rule of thumb . I used to pull at Lanesville Ind .. Pops DC always put up a hard fight and a Fine impressive Show ,. My Dad and his uncles LOVED watching the front end get lite in the last 40 feet or so,. and the OL Gentleman DC ended up waggling the front wheels Cat Clawing for every last inch til its nearly last breath .. I cherish that memory of seeing them proudly cheer from the seat of that ol DC ,,... they are now gone to the best threshing crew in the heavens..to earn their keep..Lol,, maybe they were not Perfect Men ,, but they were Good Men ..

If you are running stock or near stock HP use 1st gear. Make sure your hitch is as high as rules allow, typically 18 or 20 inches. You will probably do better with the DC. Don

Bolt a clevis to the drawbar quadrant to get as short as possible also....will need some nose weight.
Having fluid in the tires will put you in a higher weight class....probably will be short on horsepower.

Boy, sure wish "DC TOM was here to guide you, all of us know his devotion to the DC's and his pulling abilities. Miss Him !!

There are to many variables here to answer your question BUT, on a heavy clay track with good moisture in it if you have the tires loaded and the chain is short on the sled with a high drawbar height it will give your DC all it can handle in low gear.

My DC has 44 hp and with empty tires I was at 5570 lbs and was way down in Rs at the end of the pull. This was a really tough traction track. I did however manage to spin them and win so all was good.

If you want a good chance at winning get the drawbar up to max and as short as the rules allow. If you can I would suggest a good tune on a dyno. If RPM limited get the Rs at the allowed limit.

A couple of our better running DC we have built for pullers will run 2nd gear but although they are not stroked they both are 4 1/16 high compression engines with good reground for torque cams in them.

Good luck, this will be a learning experience and your success will depend on what style rules and track conditions. DCs are great pullers when properly set up
