As you can see from the pic there is a break pedal on each side. When I mash on either of them the tractor shows no inclination to turn, it just slows down. That got me thinking this might be a Case DH which according to Case is a D without turning breaks. I really want to hook a mower to it but it might make more sense to sell it and buy a bigger lawn tractor. Any thoughts? Any idea what it might be worth?

If you have a choice I'd sure opt for something else for just mowing. My VAC turns a 6' woods belly mower w/ease and pulls a 5' bush hog thru the brush nicely. The only issue I ever had with the VAC was 1st gear was to high. I had 34" wheels and that geared me up to much. Way too much weight with that D series to move across any kind of grass

DH models were early tractors (39-41 I think; mine is a 1940 model). Your model is significantly later than my DH. It has an oil filter and hydraulics which were later. Mine has a clutch lever on the left that works backwards (it's rather dangerous if you're used to the right hand clutch), has a latching brake handle on the right, taller platform. I have a similar model (1940) DC for parts that has foot brakes but it uses the same platform.

Also, check your serial number. DH would actually be stamped in the S/N.

As far as mowing, a DC/DH would be heavy. Fine if you're running a sickle mower and knocking down hay but rather tough on a yard if you're looking for a nice smooth finish look.

Hope this helps.

It definitely is not a DH: there would be no brake pedals and this tractor is too new to not have brakes. The pedals on the DC's of the DH era came up through the foot boards. Case changed from band brakes to disc brakes in 1941; your tractor has disc brakes.

It's a DC-4. Looks like no live pto......serial number should be on a plate under the battery......or on the bell housing flange left side where engine and trans. meet.

It just needs new brake linings and seals. With the wheels set in like they are.getting to the brakes will be a project.

That is a very nice DC-4.
