1030 pto seal

I am not a Case person, however Iam trying to help a friend who is. He needs to change the pto seal on his 1030 Case (1968) tractor. It has started to leak severely. What would all be involved, other than draining the oil? Can this be done without removing the pto shaft? If not how does the shaft get removed? His manuals do not show this procedure. Thanks Don

He should be able to remove the seal from the carrier with everything in place. Sometimes they can be popped out w/ a screwdriver, or sometimes sheet metal screws are inserted & used to pull the old seal out.

Here is a parts break down of what all is involved with the seal.

I t seems very similar to the PTO seal on my 1070. I replaced the PTO seal and it still leaked quited a bit even with the new seal. There was enough room to "stack" a second seal in the cavity and so far with about 20 hours on a bailer it has not leaked.

John Saeli's idea of knocking a hole in the seal's band with a punch and putting in a screw to pull the seal out with is a great idea.

I would also drain some of the hydraulic oil out and park the tractor pointing down hill to avoid a big oil mess when you pull the seal. You may already know that quite a bit of oil can run out before you get the new seal in place.

Thank you for your generous advice. Seal has been installed per your knowledge and help, it is running and not leaking. Thank-you Don and Jon
