Got a 530 at an Auction This Weekend

Picked up a 531 at an auction this past weekend. It will make a nice addition to my hay crew. One problem though, It was a little hard to start at the Auction Sat, and again when I went to pick it up yesterday, though once it started, it seemed to run well. Put it on the trailer and towed it home, mostly on back roads. When I went to unload it, it would not start. Cracked the coupling on the fuel line and fuel came out. Didn't have time to pull the little screen out at the injector, that is next. What else should I look for? It seems if it was compression, it wouldn't have started earlier, though the hour meter is 4700. My first suspicion is the bumpy back roads loosened trash in the fuel system. Any suggestions?

I had a 530 , great tractor. Was it hard to start when the tractor was cold ? My tractor would be a slow starter on the first start, but would start right up if shut off once warm. These are a low compression motor. They are hard to start when it gets cold, and need to be plugged in, or have a working manifold heater.

i love my 530. mine smokes real bad but starts the instant the starter is pushed. i put new injectors and new pump seals in mine last year. i would check the following
1. make sure the pull shut down cable is snug, when you pull it it should pull the lever back and when you push it the lever should go back forward. if the clamp is loose the cable may be sliding in it and not pushing it the lever forward.
2. clean your fuel filters. anytime i have a problem with mine power/or starting it is because
my filters are clogged with brown slime mold.
3. also make sure it is turning over fast enough. i put a new starter sel. battery cables and a bigger battery on mine and i couldn't believe how much faster it rolled over!! that may also be why mine starts so quick.

Gus, The stop cable is something I need to check! That is also the type of thing that may have wiggled loose on a bumpy back road. I will also need to charge the battery as I ran it down trying to start it, but my 800 and 630 (both diesels) start almost as soon as they start to turn, at least if it is over 45 or 50 degrees. Fuel looked OK when I cracked the fuel line, so I do not think it is filters but I will add that to the list if nothing else works.

OK, after all of the attempts to start this tractor after I got it home, went out after work last night and checked the very good suggestions people made, but everything seemed in order. So I decided to give it one last try before pulling out the wrenches. Turned on the full, set the shift to S, turned the key and it fired right up! This leads me to think one of three things happened:

1. The bumpy back roads shook up some trash or other impurities and they settled out overnight.

2. The injector pump is sensitive to having the fuel left on.

3. The Diesel Mechanic Ferry paid me a visit Sunday night and fixed whatever was wrong;)

Nice find, a lot of older tractors have bad cables and improperly sized batteries. If it's not turning briskly go over the electrical system, especially if it has white smoke when cranking.

A new Nippondenso gear reduction starter off a 580 C hoe/ldr makes a tremendous difference n cranking and probably cheaper than the Delco can be repaired. You will have to tweak the steering lines where they pass the starter and redo the cabling.
