I recently split my 430 because the clutch would always grind when going into gear. thinking the clutch was shot. I had the flywheel machined clutch was checked by a fellow that rebuilds them and said it was fine. so back together it went checking bearings etc to still have it do the same thing. what am I missing?

How are the splines on the tranny input shaft where the clutch disc rides? The disc may be hangind in the warn splines. Did you adjust the finger heith on all 3 fingers?

Nothing is mentioned about the pressure plate. Was that inspected? My guess is that if you replace the pressure plate & clutch disc, you will eliminate the problem.

(reply to post at 12:55:54 06/17/15) [ /quote] at present I forget what year it is will have to look that up again. I took the assby to a fellow that rebuilds clutchs etc. he didn't actually do any adjusting just looked at it carefully and said all was well. so I believe I checked the splines but may have missed something. I hate to pull it apart again but it looks like I will have to. thanks for the replies.

We had a 430. It ground gears from day one. The only thing we could do was to idle it way down so it wouldn't grind as much.

Brian, if you have the earlier 430 model 1960 - 1964 with the throw out yoke that looks like in the pic, check for a crack at the pivot hump. If cracked will flex and not push the release bearing far enough into the pressure plate levers to fully release the friction disc.

I had that problem with this yoke for some time before it separated far enough until it became nearly impossible to shift.

What condition was the pilot bearing in? If it is tight, the input shaft will spin at the same seed as the crank.....
