CASE IH 1494 fuel issue

I purchased a Case IH 1494 a while back and have been experiencing fuel problems. The tractor will intermittently shutoff during use and would have to have the air bled out of the system for it to start back. It would run once the air was bled off however problem would return fairly quickly. I filled tractor completely full with diesel and found that it would run fine for longer period of time. After troubleshooting I found that the tractor would begin to get air into fuel system after it got below the 2/3sh level in the tank. A friend recommended replacing the steel tube inside the tank thinking it could possible have a hole in it causing tractor to draw air once fuel got below this level. I pulled tank and replaced the inside line but am still experiencing the exact same issue.

Any one have any ideas where to go next? My next direction was to possible change the LIFTPUMP out. Wanted some other opinions also.

I went thru exactly the same thing with my 1494. Finally put an electric fuel pump between the tank and the lift pump. It is wired so it pumps whenever the key is on. Totally eliminated the problem. Best $65 I have ever spent; took about 30 minutes.
 
Single under hood tank or saddles? Have you checked where all the nylon lines connect to the steel fittings? Did this start after you changed fuel filters by chance?
 
Saddle Tanks. Yes I have checked the lines at the connection. Doesn't seem to have any cracks or loose connections visually. I have not however replaced them. I cant remember back far enough to remember if the issue occurred before I changed the fuel filters. (slept since then) I do have another set of fuel filters that I could put on. Are you thinking that Air could be entering the system at this point?
 
Did you change all the O rings on the filters? That was my thought... There are a minimum of 3 per filter.

Also, have you checked that your lift pump is actually pumping? Disconnect the supply line from the injector pump, and see if fuel pulses from the line. Just because the pump works when you manually pump, doesn't mean it works when the engine does it. There is a steel push rod that goes between the cam and the lift pump that can wear enough to not cycle the lift pump.

How bad is it to bleed when you have to do it? Have to do it at injector pump and injectors?

Check the nylon line that goes from the lift pump to the right tank...

Did you clean the tank and look for floaters when you had it open?

Electric pumps have a place. In my opinion, this isn't it. It isn't an overly complicated system.
 
I do recall changing all "o" rings with the filter change. It is not a bad enough bleed down that you have to bleed the injectors off to get it to restart. Each time you only have to bleed the air off at the injector pump itself.

When the tank was pulled I did clean it out before having it repaired.

I have not checked/pulled the supply line off and checked fuel flow to the injector pump from the lift pump. I will do this, this afternoon.

If the steel rod is worn, what is involved with replacing it? Is it removed from the lift pump side? I will also reinspect the line from tank to lift pump.
 
On any of my CAV rotary pump DBs, if they get air, you have to bleed at the injectors.

I'd bet it is just starving for fuel... The push rod just slide out of the block from behind the lift pump. Just a solid piece of 3/8"ish steel rod a couple inches long that rides on the cam.
 
OK. Yes I have never bled at the injector for this issue

So are you thinking the rod is worn not allowing proper fuel flow to injector pump?

Should I go ahead and replace lift pump also?
 
Just one thought. could be the rod, could be the lift pump, could be the cam, could be something on a completely different track.

Check it before you start throwing parts at it. Easy to do. It gives more clues to the puzzle.
 

I removed the lift pump & pulled the fuel rod tonight. Found the rod was worn on the CAM side.
Actually length was about .110 shorter than a new rod.

Going to order replacement and see if this corrects my issue.
