400 hydraulics

wondering if you guys can help me out. I bought a john deere 30 combine with hydraulic lift. when I connect both hoses, the head will lift, but don't go down. if I only plug in one hose, it works fine. is this normal? I thought both lines needed to connected to have up and down pressure

No this is not normal. And, the problem with only using 1 hose is that when going in the opposite direction w/ the cylinder, the pump is forced to by-pass through the relief valve which, over time, will shorten the life of the pump. Hopefully, someone smarter than me will chime in here & help out. Does the Eagle hitch work OK?

If I had to guess, I would bet the problem is with the male coupling. You using the original CASE Couplings, or the newer Puss Pioneer?

I believe they're the pioneer. do you think they're not opening the ball enough to let the fluid through??

I think something is happening where when the hydraulic pressure is forcing oil through the coupler, the 1 way, it shuts it off, but just gravity down doesn't shut it off. I think your hydraulic system is fine. Swap male couplers, 1 hose to the other & try it. If it fails to raise, you found it.

I put new male couplers on my disc last week and still have the same problem. could it be one of the female couplers?

Have you made any changes to the tractor's plumbing? Both top hoses should be going to the remotes, & the 2 lower hoses going to the Eagle Hitch. I don't know about the female couplers. Have you tried simply switching from side to side, so that instead of pulling back to lift, you push forward to lift?

both top hoses go to remotes.eagle hitch only has one hose. I'll try switching them around. thanks

The eagle hitch should have two hoses leading to the cylinder. Did the hydraulic remotes work in the past, before you got the combine? You might have to find a manual for the 400 and puzzle this thing out.

I put the remote spool on recently. the eagle hitch has one hose and the other is plugged. I don't know jack about hydraulics, and I don't see where the other hose would connect on the top cover. I imagine there is a reason why there isn't a second hose connected. is there something plugged inside the valve itself??
thanks

Which 400 are you working on? Is it the big 400, or the 400B with Case-O-Matic?

I'm going out on a limb here. Is your tractor a "big" 400 with the round nose our the other version with the headlights in the nose? The "big" 400 will be plumbed as others have said with the valve body and pump on the back of the tractor above the PTO. The eagle hitch cylinder must have 2 hoses to work correctly on this tractor. If you have the other version that I believe has the valve under the dash/fuel tank some thing on the valve body needs to be changed to go between single and double acting cylinders. Others will have to chime in on how to set it up correctly.

Good luck!!

Eli

yeah, they're under the fuel tank (lights in the nose). i'm wondering if there is a pipe plug or something that has to go in or out as to why the remotes aren't working correctly.

Find a operators manual. It should show you how to switch from single to double acting hydraulics.
