Hello, working on a late DC project and was wondering if you were putting one together which front end would you use? I have a heart shape wide front needing work, set back DC4 wide front, single tire front and an adjustable wide front end. Which is handiest to use, rarest, or most unusual? Two of the tractors are hand clutch and one is a foot clutch version. Should make one really nice complete tractor, maybe two. Thanks for your thoughts never grew up around a DC and all of my SC's are AWF and I know they are not the sharpest turning tractor, Mike

I prefer narrow front. Not real sold on a single wheel though. Adjustable wide would be my second option, and my final is my DC4. If mine wasn't how Grandpa got it, I would have put a narrow front on it.

I would tend to go with what is uncommon in your area if you are going to show your tractor. In this area AWF's are rare, as would be a single. If you are going to actually use the tractor the heart front is a good choice. Don

Like Don said If I was going to use the tractor I would go with the Heart Shaped front.
The single front foot clutch would likely be the rarest. but to be correct the foot clutch tractors had a different single front with a 9:00 tire and after 51 they used a curved arm on all but the straight axles.

I have used all of the different front ends and they all have their place.

You could restore several front ends and change them back and forth. I have a DC-4 foot clutch with the heart shaped front that I have put narrow front on to cultivate and switched back when finished. They are not hard to change on a DC. I have a heavy angle iron that I bolt vertically onto 2 threaded holes in the radiator bracket. It is the right length to put a floor jack under to raise or lower as needed.

Here is a 53 DC-3 I changed to a DC-4 This wide front is too light for any heavy work with the eagle hitch. It was my favorite front end for switching tobacco wagons out. When changing this style wide front the adjustable wide front, narrow front and single front can be on at the same time as the wide front.

Here's the DC-4 foot clutch with the narrow front on. I wish I would have had a single front end when I was raising tobacco as it would have been better.

Here is the DC-4 with the original front end. This is my favorite tractor to use. This front end is heavier than all of the others except for the last adjustable wide fronts with the cast wheels.

This would be my choice for open field work, but it is clumsy in tight places.

If you just want a tractor that is a pleasure to drive in tight places single wheel is like having power steering. bush hogging pulling a trailer cultivating light work their great, frankly put your foot on one brake and you can make perfect crop circles very tight turning radius. The single front wheel is quite heavy but you'll still need added weight for real heavy jobs. The Dc has quite a bit of power so front weight will be important if you use it for heavy work. I have an SC with left hand clutch and single front wheel .

I acquired and restored two DC3s before I acquired a DC AWF and restored it. I liked the AWF characteristics so much that that I acquired AWFs for the two DC3s. The steering is much more friendly and the front end pitch is much less. For the AWF, plow furrows are no threat to breaking a hand. Can't say that for the DC3. With the right rear tire in the plow furrow, a DC3 rides heavy on the right front tire. This requires a tiresome tugging to the left on the steering wheel.

I put a single tire on another DC3 that I restored. Not happy with the single. The single tire finds every pot hole and rut and poorly maneuvers across a plow furrow going at an angle. I replaced the single with a set back wide axle--creating a DC4.

I grew up driving dad's C Case having the set back front axle. The set back front axle is friendly to steer and turns sharp. Has clearance for belt work. No so the AWF. I think I would like the heart shaped front axle arrangement a tad better than the set back.

My brother also grew up driving dad's C Case. Later, he acquired a DC3. It soon got converted to a DC4. Less fighting the steering wheel. The DC4 turned sharper and the steering linkage did not catch brush and fence posts and no good place for the chickens to roost and poop on the left side of the tractor. LOL.
