VAI questions.

I have inherited a 1950 Case VAI. My father pulled it out of a fence row in 2011. He spent about 2 years fixing it. He passed away in March of this year. I also inherited two Farmall H's. I have the parts manual, I&T manual and a dealer service manual reprint for the VAI. I am not new to tractors, grew up on Farmall red and have owned a 51 FCub for almost 19 years. I also own a 50 JDA in the middle of a rebuild.
The Case did not have a serial number tag when he pulled it out of the fence row, but we narrowed it down to between 5450500 and 5458562 by the parts manual.
First question, is there any way of narrowing down the number more by casting codes ?
Second question. Can someone post a picture of how the throttle linkage hooks to the governor arm ?
I am not getting any governor response, so before I dive into the governor I want to make sure the external parts are right.

Thanks

1950 Case VAI
This is as close as he could get to the original color of the tractor. We figured it belonged to the forest service but can't be sure since the tractor had been in a fence row for over 20 years.

Rodney if the engine is original to the tractor the serial number will be stamped on the block where it mates to the bellhousing on the left
side of the tractor. Sometimes they can be hard to see and the new paint may make it even harder but it should be there.

As far as I know the engine is original. The number is still readable. I did not how Case matched engine numbers to tractor serial numbers. I know my Cub numbers are different because of using the engines for other applications. My JD A has one tag, and I have not looked at my H engine numbers but they have the original tractor tag on them.
I am going through as many of the older VAI topics as I can to learn about this style of Case. Hopefully I can figure this governor out without to much trouble or silly questions.

Thanks

On the front of the engine is a lever sticking up
that looks like bullhorns. Sorta like a T that pivots on a 3/8 shaft.
Wiggle it fore & aft.
On that 3/8 shaft, in the housing under a seal, is a tiny
Torrington roller bearing that either rusts or otherwise comes apart.
This is a common place to fail and the few thousandths wear on the shaft there,
translates to several fractions of an inch at the end of the lever and
mostly negates the action of the governor.

Thanks for the response on the governor. I figured I would have to take it apart, just wanted another opinion before I do it.

These are from a VAI I recently bought. Other that the support bracket being in the wrong holes everything is close to being as it should be. On the VAI the support goes back due to it have a higher engine speed. With the hand throttle lever up there should be slight pressure on the spring. With it down there should be a significant amount of pressure on the spring and the adjusting nuts should be against the support. With lever up you should be able to move the linkage at the carburetor back on forth fairly easily. With it down it should have the carb fully open and have some resistance to pushing it back closed. Did not know by your description if there was not any increase in speed when moving the lever of if it was revving wide open. Hope this will help to verify linkage is correct. Lee

The first picture shows me my coil is in the wrong spot. It also shows my linkage is not hooked up right. Can't remember for sure why dad hooked it up the way he did but I think it was engine run away related. I will hook the linkage up correctly and see what happens. Hopefully I will not have dive into the governor.

Thanks

It has been a while since I posted this, but I got the throttle problem fixed. Took all the linkage apart and straightened the rods. Added a spring to the foot pedal and hand throttle pivot per the parts manual and every thing works like it is suppose to. I also narrowed down the serial number even more by the parts manual. It is between 5458210 and 5458562.

Again thanks for the pictures and help.
