INJECTION PUMP PROBLEM

So here I am again guys with another problem. I know I am probably just working through them with this old 1958 Case 801B tractor, but its starting to become a major headache. So I noticed that while I was mowing yesterday, (first time I have used the tractor since I bought it a year ago and tearing it down to fix a few things and take care of some WAY overdue maintenance issues,) that the rpms would jump sometimes for a few moments and then go back down. Well, it did it again this morning, and it stayed that way. I had to take my shirt off and shove it in the air intake to get the old girl to shut down. The injection pump is a rotary style pump. American Bosch PSB4A-75D-3594C5. I have been told there are some slip clutches inside the pump that probably stuck together causing the uncontrolled engine rpm situation. First quote I got over the phone was $1000+. When I started it up, the seals had all shrunk and was leaking diesel really bad. I was advised to put some Type F AFT in with the diesel to help the seals swell back up. I did, and it stopped leaking, but now I can't control the rpm. Related? Or bad timing? Anyone have a spare that they are looking to sell? Know someone that rebuilds?
 
not sure wher e you are,,. call jeff at interstate injection,, Seymour ind,, 812-523-3308 . it will cost half that or less there . and they will ship anywhere ,, I don't use any shop in Louisville area anymore ,, to durn hi ,,. and the last one they tried to fix goes on my 801 b..
 

I have that exact Injector pump from an early 1959 Case 801. I removed the rotary pump about 6 months ago and replaced it with a 830 pump and filter system. See picture.
This rotary pump was working great and the only reason I changed it was I wanted the an inline pump. If you are interested contact me.

Could be the fuel control eccentric unit under the side cover sticking, it must move freely. The late style can be taken apart and cleaned, the early welded style can't. When the governor rod moves forward fuel is increased, when flyweights overcome spring tension the rod pulls back on the internal spring governor, which Case used.
 
Thanks for the reply everyone. I have had a long day. I did get it fixed. I talked to a gentleman today from an injection pump shop that talked me through how to take the pump partially apart over the phone. Ended up being that a check valve had come apart and the ball was under the governor plate inside the head. He said I was lucky because it could of done that or jammed the head of my pump causing a rebuild to be necessary. Thought I was out of the woods. Got it going, and now something has come loose in the transmission. I am hoping I am getting through all the odds and ends that are wrong so it can become a good useful tractor. Thanks again folks. Yes, you are lucky the head didn't seize when the return valve came apart. The IH 66 series VA8518 used to come apart and cause havoc with the governor control, if the pieces got under the control sleeve the engine would run overspeed, if on top engine would not speed up or not start. Most of the time the head would be ruined by plunger seizure. The 86 series were changed to a different fitting. I don't play the lottery, but maybe you should get a ticket!
 
Diesel Tech - I thought about doing that very thing! But like I said, as soon as I got back on the tractor and started mowing again, somithing went in the tranny, and now I am in the process of taking that apart, so I think all my good luck went down the drain.


Jim from Cal - That is a BEAUTIFUL 800! I wish my sheet metal was that straight and pretty. I will eventually get around to getting it straightened out from the guys who dented it all up before me and get it repainted, but for now I just need to get her going again, and keep her going consistantly.
 
I didn't realize an 830 pump could be used for an 800.

I'm now kicking myself, I had a chance to get a pump off an 830 several years ago and past on the deal
 


Everything fuel related should be got from the donor, the pump drive is different right from the block and the filtering and lines will make the job easier. The old filtering system can be used but requires some gymnastics to get all hooked up and working.
