I installed a 12volt generator and was not getting any voltage. Replaced the regulater now it shows it is discharging. Could I have a possitive ground generator?

I been thru the process of converting several D series from 6 to 12 volts. I stayed with a generator rather that go to alternator for appearance reasons. The new regulator must match the generator. I had to remote mount the regulator. I found space below the fuel tank and above the clutch.

Amp meters can be wired backwards and indicate discharge rather that charge. With engine stopped and lights on, you should see discharge. If so, the amp meter is properly wired. The distributor will use current and thus show a small discharge if the generator is not working.

Early on, Ford (Autolite brand) had positive ground. GM (Delco Remy) is negative ground.

Sometimes new or rebuilt generators need to be "activated" for the purpose of initially magnetizing the field windings. If you need to, check with an old school mechanic on how to do that.

Well, here's your ol phart mechanic with his 2 bits. Generators, if they've been off, disconnected or otherwise putzed with should be polarized. there are 2 basic styles or types of generators, an "A" circuit or a "B" circuit using generator terminolgy. Delco (GM) are wound in an A circuit configuration while Autolite (Ford) use a B circuit. Most of our Case tractors will be a B circuit. The method of polarization differs. To polarize a B circuit, disconnect the lead from the field terminal of the regulator and touch that lead to the regulator battery terminal. The resulting surge of current will correctly polarize the generator.
