I have a 1971 case 444 garden tractor with a hydrolic drive.
when I push the lever for forward or reverse the tractor lunges.
The front wheels will come off the ground and almost throw you off if you aren't hanging on. there is no slipping into gear. you have to have the throttle at almost an idle to put it into gear and not be jolted and run over something. this doesn't seem like it should be normal'.
I just bought the tractor.
Is there a problem with the valves or something?

Try lubeing the lever a bit there is a centering cam below the dash and the lever moves up and down in the slot in the cam. You don't need to push the lever all the way forward either.

Thanks, I will try that.

I also think that the shift rod ( Hi-Lo) is stuck in low. Should the rod with the 90 deg bend move from left to right, (like in and out) ? or up and down?
It won't move in and out.

It moves in and out .... been working on mind { bought a basket Case } going thur it as going together ...
There's not a lot to the rear end .... a pilot gear slides back and forth { from the low side to the high side }
I'm sure others will step in and explain it better ...

GOOD luck on the 444 ........... mark

push down just a bit on the lever then push SLOWLY in one direction or the other, this is your speed control as well as fwd and rev, you are just turning on a hyd motor in one direction or the other,,, Great little work horse tractors

Ask the question down in the Garden Tractors section. Gu nmae of Tom Arnold will answer, he has a Case garden tractor website too.
