david brown 880 things to look for

am inspecting a david brown selectamatic 880, as a bin tractor for an orchard, were these a good tractor? are parts commonly available? and what are the main things to look for prior to purchase, any thoughts greatly
appreciated.

It is going on 50 years old. Look at everything. Wiring, gauges, generator, lights on all British stuff is suspect at best. They generally leak, if they don't leak you should make sure there is actually oil in them.

They were a very advanced tractor for 1965, most had live PTO/hydraulics, some even had power assisted steering, and 12 speed transmissions. They are as good on fuel as anything, even much newer stuff.

If it isn't rusted out, tires are good, electricals work, starts good cold, 3 point works, and it doesn't leak too much, it could be a good small tractor for not much money.

If you can find one, a DB 885(not Case-IH 885) is an improved version, they were built until the early 80s. Updates include a syncro transmission and better steering.
