Crank start Case L

Not a factory one....no place for the starter on the bell housing....unless you have a starter delete model.
Some guys have put ring gears on the belt pulley....some use the pto shaft for a place to put ring gear and starter.
Got a 1930 Model L I use to pull....had to crank start it every time.
There is an art to crank starting any tractor, lot of people have trouble doing it.

I have crank started an L more times than I care to count and it was high compression. On ours, pull choke out for 2 pulls of the crank, choke off and it would start on the next pull 99 times out of 100 if it had been run within a day or 2. Hope yours will start easily. I have seen lots of L's and have only seen one with factory electric start.

I have been warned about the danger of crank starting, my 1936 Case L has a pulley on the flywheel and I was wondering if I could use that to start the tractor like the IH cub cadets having a belt starter/generator.

Just insert the crank in the 9 o'clock position and pull to 12 o'clock and just cup your hand so it would pull away from you. In all the years I cranked ours, it never backfired.

I just saw a Case C Vinyard tractor with a generator set up to start it. They put a large sproket on the crank drive(the peice that has a spring and you push in to engage crank. The generator was mounted on the side of the tractor and it had a small sproket connecting to the big sproket with a roller chain. Dick, OR.

The old Cushman golf carts had a combination starter generator that ran off a belt. They may not start an L, maybe there is something like that only bigger out there

I wouldn't worry about hand cranking an L. I have one, and have NEVER had an issue with it back firing. Don't mess with a classic by cobbling
something together.

Never grip the crank, always cup your hand or you could break a thumb if the tractor backfires. ALWAYS pull up on the crank, never push down on it, that is how people
break their arm. If the impulse on the mag is set properly and the spark plugs are wired correctly then the tractor can't backfire. Oil the impulse regularly, especially
if the tractor has been setting for a period of time. Make sure you hear a distinct "snap" as the engine goes over top dead center. Hand cranking a tractor shouldn't be
something that you fear. As with everything mechanical, just use some common sense and use some caution.

(quoted from post at 23:02:50 06/07/15) Hello, I was wondering if I could install a starter/generator on my crank start Case L?

Thanks

Does your L have a lever beside the throttle lever for setting the timing? If it does you use this to retard the timing a little before you start pulling on the crank. Best advice would be to find a manual for your tractor and follow the directions on starting the tractor.

I installed both a starter and a distributor on my Case L. It has oversize pistons and High compression head off an LA propane. Too hard to crank for an old man.

It would fire when expected but only once. The first fire would spin the engine fast enough to kick out the mag's impulse but not fast enough for the mag to fire without the impulse so the engine would come to a stop. Pull the crank again and this scenario would repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat. Had to pull start the tractor.

I burned no bridges so the tractor can be returned to normal.
