1175 steering/brake problem.

I have a weird situation with our 1175. When you turn the steering wheel to the right the right brake grabs w/o hitting the brake pedal. The shorter you turn, the harder it grabs. Any ideas what is up with that? Thanks, Don

Hi Don, yes that occurs when spools in the brake valve get sticky. These spools are located under the fittings that the brake lines themselves are fastened to. Remove the bolt securing the line and then the large fitting that is under the line. You will see a large slot in the end of the spool that a screwdriver can be inserted in. Spin the spool and it usually pops out a little, being pushed by a very light spring. Pull out spool and blow air and solvents in the bore hoping to dislodge contaminates. Complete valve removal and cleaning can sometimes be required in severe cases. Has to be clean enough so that light spring pushes spool out. The gunk in the valve gets by the filters if the by-pass is opened due to dirty filters or cold oil. Also change filter and possibly oil and check to make sure the by-pass is in the filter. Hope this helps, Rod.

Rod thanks for the explanation. My first tractor was a new 1070 in the fall of 1974. After a couple of years a nut cracked on a transmission shaft, gears were touching each other making filings that went through the system. Took it to the dealer they had the power train completely gutted and they flushed filings out of everything they could get to but either they didn't get them all or the damage to the master cylinder had already started. Warranty fixed it but a little later the brakes were applying themselves. After replacing a couple sets of brakes the dealer finally replaced the master cylinder. He told me the filters should have kept the filings out of the master cylinder, but evidently the filters plugged and bypassed.Tractor was out of warranty by then but the dealer, Mather Implement in Laurens Iowa was very good to me and stood the labor if I would pay for the new master cylinder. Master cylinder was $400 at that time. Traded it off with 1800 hours after the power shift went out. Wish I had that tractor now.

Don the brake valve is located on the firewall above the rear of engine. If you remove the hood and look under the dog house above the intake manifold you will see the brake lines and fittings I referred too. Clean the area well and see what kind of luck you have. Give me a call if you have further questions. We got home late and I did not know if I should call then. Rod.
