Did the customer have a choice of the two exhaust versions or was it a production change

Generally the utility & orchard tractors have the underslung exhaust and the general purpose tractors upright exhaust. But I suspect you could get it factory option either way or change it yourself depending on what you are using the tractor for.

The 300's were available with either exhaust. I agree with Joe more of the utility's seem to have down exhaust.
In my area we have mainly 311's and I see about an even mix of up and down exhaust. the build card will show which style it was built with. Here are some advertisements,

here's a VAC-14 with factory down exhaust

The down exhaust make for a hot floor board. Pulling a rotary hoe or pulling a drag warms up the transmission, that and the heat from the exhaust piping brings a lot of heat to the operator. Grinding ear corn inside a driveway of a corn crib is the main reason Dad changed ours to vertical. Even with all doors open you got a lot of exhaust smell.
