Case 430 tractor

My son just traded for a Case 430. Did a little research and found out the 430 is a diesel, but looking at the tractor that didn't seem right, checked the serial number plate and it says 440-L.
So this is a 430, but with a gas engine making it a 440, is that correct? Why would the decal say "430" when it's really a 440? is this just an oddity or was there a method to this madness? Thanks.

it is a 430, the serial tag will tell how it was built, dsl/gas/ adjustable axles/no adjustable axles. ect by what model umber is stamped, I have a 530 tag is stamped a 541
5- series
4- adjustable front and rear axles
1- gasoline engine

Have you not got that reversed, Tom? I believe the 4 indicates spark ignition and the 1 indicates row crop (adjustable axles).

This is a utility model, not row crop, so the 440 means?

4 - series
4 - spark ignition/gas engine
0 - utility style

any idea what the "L" stands for in "440 - L"

L on the hundred series stands for low gear, I think ,, your tractor may have a diesels hood tin installed on it rite before you got it ... a lot can happen 40 or 50 yrs ,,. I went from a kid to a old codger
