VAC transmission split

Dad was mowing lawn with his VAC and belly mower and something let loose on the front end of the pinion shaft. He tried to split it between the torque tube and transmission today while I was spraying. He cannot get it to slide apart. Will it slide apart, or is there something not obvious holding it together? Belt pulley shaft? IT manual would be of more help inside the wood burner. Thanks for the help guys.

More than likely the problem is the 2 dowel pins. They can hold pretty tight sometimes. There is not anything internally that should keep it from coming apart. Lee

They can be a bear sometimes. The problem is the locator pins and the studs. I swear my 1953 had one body bound stud on either side, if not it was very close fit. The key seems to be keeping in straight alignment as it is backed off the pins & studs. I used plastic felling wedges to bump it and maintain the alignment. You might have to rig up a couple of jacks. Don't remove the rear wheels like KESTREL did, you need them for support.

He is a link to a thread that may help.
