case 930 comfort king

There is a man selling a case 930 diesel
with a loader that I'm thinking about
looking at. It looks fairly good with
good tires. Says it has a power steering
leak. But motor has been rebuilt. Can
someone tell me if this is a good
tractor and what to look for. Mainly be
used for loader work possibly baling
hay. He is asking $5000. Is that decent.
Thanks

930's are great tractors. Easy to work on if you ever need to. Brakes can be troublesome, just need to be kept adjusted properly and a little TLC from time to time. I have a gas with a loader great tractor, little thirsty on gas but, maybe that's why I got it with 1500 hours on a working tach. My 930 Diesel with original cab and glass, rebuilt(not by me) with M&W Turbo is a real work horse. Too bad it sets in the shed, more in the last 4 years than it has been out. I don't think the price is out of line if the loader is in good condition. I traded for my 930 with an almost new loader, gave a Ford 4000 SU rear blade and worn out loader even up. Never looked back!

You can look up and print out the Nebraska Tractor Tests and compare the test results of different tractors. 941 CK diesel is test #918.

The 401 diesel engine is pretty stout and economical, one of the best features of a 930. Manual brakes, heavy clutch pedal, belt driven power steering and hydraulics are dated and could be weak points. Using one all day on a loader cleaning barns would tire me out.

A 930 Comfort King diesel, the 8 speed tractor, will be easy on fuel even doing hard work. This is a 85 HP or more if turned up . All high HP gas tractors eat fuel, and that is why we don't see gas tractors any more. You will find this tractor to be a excellent tractor for the time it was built in. Remember these tractors went out of production in 1968/69 , so don't compare it with a tractor built in the 90's. I have a 930, and love it.

Here is what it looks like. I don't know much about them. All I've ever ran was 3020s and 4020s

Just a few comments:
Drive it for a while before you buy it: shifting, reversing, steering, brakes and clutch are somewhat different than on a 4020. If you are used to a 4020, you might like a 970 or 1070 Case better than a 930.

It looks like a Western style tractor, on row crops the front axle is reversed to the forward position. For loader work the forward axle will balance better with more weight on the rear axle for traction, but the rear position turns tighter.

Check what the hydraulic pressure is on a 930 (1500 PSI?). The loader cylinders don't look like they are a very large diameter, they may be sized for a higher pressure hydraulic system (2000 PSI?). I would verify that the loader will pick up a heavy load like a bale.

A 930 will handle a round baler about like a 4020 would, at PTO speed they have about the same horse power. Check which PTO shaft the tractor and baler have. The 930's PTO shaft does not change over easily like a 4020 or a 70 series Case.

That looks like a pretty nice one. $5000 would be a little high in this area, but maybe not in yours.

Also, I would absolutely check the steering, and also the power steering assist. If there has been a lot of rain, or water get in the steering column, it can sometime rust the lower bearings and gear. Very expensive to fix.

Power Steering on the older cases is fair at best, but certainly usable. Good luck. Bob

They work great on the round baler. My brakes are a bit poor but it's easy on fuel. Looks like your getting some good tires on the tractor. Thats worth a lot.

(quoted from post at 08:22:44 05/22/15) Which do y'all think is better a 4020 or a 930 for baling hay. I'm needing a backup tractor with a loader
I have a 1030 which is 50 cubes bigger than a 930 and it'll out work a 4020 on less fuel. If you can deal with a little less creature comforts they are nice work horses.

That's a nice setup. I have the same round baler. How well does it handle the 650 new Holland. Will my 3020 handle it decent on flat ground?

I saw the picture you provided, its not a bad looking tractor and maybe worth the money.

My Personal opinion on the tractor is that I would want everything working.

Does the tractor have 3pt? and does it work?

Works perfect. I use an 870 Case most of the time because I like the powershift and A/C but the 930 will have that 870 for lunch. Way more power from the 401 6 cylinder over that 336 4 banger.
