clutch problem

Have a 885 Case that two stage clutch will not engauge the PTO. My owners manual does not address how to adjust the PTO clutch. How do I do that?? Thanks

Clarification question,

"Will not engage", as in it goes into gear, but the shaft doesn't turn with the clutch out?

It Will Turn and run fine. The problem I have is that the PTO will not engauge with the clutch when tractor is running. With the PTO hooked to a implement, I have to engauge the PTO and then start the engine. The owners manual only describes how to adjust the engine clutch and this seems not to affect the second stage of the clutch for the PTO. It only scrapes and grinds when I try to engage the PTO with the engine running. Otherwise, the PTO works fine.

Did the problem come on all at once? How often is/ was the PTO/tractor used?

Could be an adjustment issue, but if it is infrequently used it is probably a stuck separator plate(plate that is supposed to float between the PTO and traction clutch discs).

It may free up with some use. Think heavy brush hogging, get into a heavy mess of stuff where it is really working, then push the clutch in. A tiller or other similar implement might work too.

Use very often. I use it with fertilizer spreader, haybine, baler, etc. Came on gradual. I think it is an adjustment problem. I just need some to tell me how to adjust it. Owners manual is no help. Only addresses main or first stage of clutch.

Take the cover off the side of the bellhousing. There are 3 set screws with jamb nuts that control the disengagement point of the pto clutch. Loosen jamb nuts and screw the set screws each in a 1/2 a turn at a time until you get the clutch movement you want. You will have to turn the engine over to get to each one. They should have a gap of .070"-.100" on their front ends after adjusted.

Thanks for the info. I'll try that tomorrow. My massey ferguson 135 had the same problem and that adjustment cured the problem. I just did not know where the adjustment point or the proper setting for the 885. Thanks again.
