800 Gas Electrical Q & A

I'm finally getting around to putting the dash and wiring harness back on an almost restored 800 gas and have a couple of questions. The voltage regulator has three terminals on it - F, GEN, and BAT (left to right in the pick). I'm guessing that F goes to the field terminal on the generator, GEN to the other terminal on the generator, and BAT goes back to the battery terminal on the ignition switch.

1. The generator terminals are not marked that I can see. Which is which?
2. And does the other (non field) terminal on the genny also run back to the ammeter gauge?

Thanks ... Steve Miller

The shop manual is not crystal clear on the gen posts, but it appears that as you look at the brush end of the gen the Field terminal is
on the right and the Armature terminal is on the left. The field wire is usually a smaller gauge then the A if that's any help. The G
terminal on the reg goes to the A terminal on the gen. The F term on the reg to the F term on the gen. Batt terminal on the reg takes
the charging current from the gen and delivers it to the starter solenoid and then thru the ammeter to feed the dash. It should be at
least a 12 ga wire to handle the 25 amps or so that the gen is capable of. I also believe it was orange in color at one time....... You should also polarize the gen when you get it wired, and that's another story

Thanks for your input, much appreciated. The schematic in the parts catalog shows only the one wire going to the gen, and it has that wire coming back to the neg side of the ammeter. I'm guessing the BAT terminal comes back to the BAT pole on the ignition switch, which also has a wire going to the starter solenoid (same pole the positive side of the battery ties to). That would complete the charging circuit you described, if I followed your description correctly. The IGN pole on the key switch ties to the positive side of the ammeter, as well as to the positive side of the coil, if I'm reading the schematic correctly. Does that make sense? The SOL pole on the key switch ties to the small terminal on the starter solenoid, I believe?

Thanks again ... Steve

F terminal on regulator to Field post on generator

G (GEN) or A (ARM) terminal on regulator to armature post on generator

BAT terminal on regulator to one side of ammeter
Other side of ammeter to battery connection at starter solenoid/switch. This makes the charging circuit. With ignition and/or lights on, engine not running ammeter should swing to negative. If it goes positive reverse ammeter connections.

Wire from Generator side of ammeter to BAT input to Ignition and light switches to supply power to the switches

IGN on key switch to + side of coil. Do not connect this to ammeter or it will be hot at all times

SOL terminal on switch is start voltage to activate the starter solenoid.
