oil question on 2390

Hello, just changed oil in our recently aquired 2390, well we use 15w40 in everything , but noticed the manual says not to use multi vis oil, just straight 30. Is there a good reason for this or where they just being old school and didnt think multi was good enough?

Lubricants have come a long ways in 35 years, since your manual was printed. Today's 15W40 is far superior to straight-weight oils. Studies have determined that most engine wear occurs on engine start-up, when cold. The advantage of a multi-grade is that it gets picked up by the pump sooner, when cold, & starts lubricating sooner than a heavier straight weight. Also when warm, it has the lubricating qualities of the heavier straight weight oils. You are fine with the 15W40.

I would recommend using straight 30 weight in the summer and possibly 10w30 in the winter, as 10w oil is hard to find. Case engines do not pump much oil to the rocker arms or valve guides, so what little oil it does get it needs to be good.

The 504 Engines bathe the Rocker Arm Assemblies with sufficient quantities of oil. Your statement about "not much oil" may have been true in the 40's, but not accurate for the last 50 years. I stand by my statement of todays 15W40 being superior to straight weights. If your statement about "not much oil" were true, then all the more reason to use 15W40.
