930 steering

My old 930 with a loader is squealing all the time and not turning.
What are my options?
New pump?
I've heard you can put a 970 pump in and run the power steering with the small pump but need a flow control?
Son thought maybe a pump off a Chevy grain truck but don't know if flow and pressure would match.

Can't answer your question but can say the power steering and brakes on the 930/1030 were not the best from day one on an otherwise solid tractor.

We ran a loader for big round bales on our 1030 for years. If you have everything in top notch condition concerning your pump , belts and pulleys, it was still just good enough at best. One learns to accommodate by training yourself to only turn the wheel while your moving. Another trick is if you need to do some tight maneuvering and need to turn sharp with a load, first lower the bucket to the ground enough to actually raise the front of the tractor off the ground, turn your wheel sharp, then pick up the load and go. Whatever you can do to relieve the stress on the system that was never meant to handle a loader. Also, if your doing a lot of bale handling like stacking bales, put a bale fork on your 3 point and carry a bale whenever possible to offset some weight on the front axle. It helps.

I'm thinking if you have belts squealing then doesn't that mean your pump isn't the problem? Evidently the power is there. Traction of the belt seems to be the issue. If you have belts squealing, its likely you now have glazed belts. Most people will then over-tighten the belts to compensate or use a belt dressing but most likely on a tractor of that age the problem may be worn pulleys. A new pump, belts or tightness of the belt won't fix that. You will need to start with the pulleys and work your way back from there. If I was to go through the work of replacing the pulleys, I'd put the new belts on at the same time and toss the old ones or keep for spares if you like having junk around you will never use. If it's been squealing, they're likely glazed or stretched anyway or at the least worn more than is detectable with the eye.

Straw Boss is right on the money. They were "adequate" at best with a loader. Pulleys and belts. Ironically, it was the fan belts on both my 830 and 930 that were the problem, not the power steering belt. Check your pulleys for wear and put on new good quality belts... If you still have a squeal, then start looking for which pulley is worn, fan or power steering and start replacing.

My 930 gas with a 3450qt bush hog loader squeals. belts are tight.. I move about 15 round bales a yr. .also move horse manure its not over worked ,Thanks for the tips I was going to by a bucket spear. I like the 3 pt idea..,

Hi all - I had the same trouble with the Pump belt squealing and I swapped the 930 water pump pulley for an 830 pulley which is a bit bigger, as described on a previous post on this forum. If you want really good steering on a tractor with an end loader you can convert it to a full hydrostatic steering, using a 12 inch ram mounted on the back of the axle, and an orbital control valve mounted near the starter motor area, connected directly to the steering shaft that used to go to the front steering box. It gives a very tight turning circle and can be operated with one finger when the bucket is fully loaded.- Kav.

Sorry I did not make that very clear- the valve is mounted on the opposite side of the tractor roughly in line with the Starter, so that the shaft is simply disconnected and bolted to the orbital valve, so that the whole system could be easily reverted to the original steering, if necessary.- Kav

Thanks Kav,

If the pulley replacing doesn't do what I want I might go with the cylinder. What diameter cylinder did you use? Did you feed it with the present power steering pump?
Where did you get the valve, new or bone yard from another tractor?
Thanks,
Harold

Hi Harold, Tomorrow I will measure the Cylinder and see if there are any numbers on the valve. I did not set this particular one up but I have done others before. It still has the standard 930 steering Pump fitted, with the hoses redirected to the orbital valve.-Kav.

Hi Harold, the Steering Cylinder on my 930 is a 4 inch Diameter with a 12 inch stroke. there is a short arm welded to the base of the Left King-pin/axle assembly. The eye on this arm where the cylinder attaches is 6 3/8 inches from the centre of the King-pin. The orbital valve is a TRW (Ross) and the following numbers are on it. 20-88-092, 27501999 and 210789. "Thompsons SA" is also cast into the valve, and a letter "T" in a triangle. The Pressure hose that used to go to the pump, now goes to that valve, and the return line goes from the valve back to the resevoir. The two Cylinder hoses go to the ports on the valve. The valve is actually mounted in the End-loader side frame, right beside the oil filter, and the steering shaft is connected directly to it. I regularly carry 10 cu ft of wet concrete in this bucket and you cannot tell if it is loaded or not. Hope this helps- Kav.
