2390 Problem

Hid the fuel pump gone over on the 2390. Reinstalled it and had exhaust manifold off to replace leaking gasket. Put everything back together, ran it on the dyno, got it warmed up, and changed the oil. when bro took the oil drain plug out he got a piece of metal on his finger and heard more hit the bottom of the bucket. Ran the oil through a strainer and found this:

Looks and feels like bearing babbitt.

Yikes! That is an unusual find in one of those large journal motors. But you are correct, somewhere there is a real bad journal with no bearing. Funny it is not nocking. Rod.

Here are pics of the bearings in a couple of the rods. The rest and the mains were similar. Mechanic at the dealer said that the babbitt did not come from these. Only other place is the cam. Checked clearence on the cam by putting dial indicator on front push rod and could read .014 just by pushing up on the bottom of the cam.

.022 difference between ID of bearing and OD of front journal of the cam.

If that had been mine the camshaft would have come out in several pieces. Had a 930 break a camshaft once, and the bearings were not nearly that bad. How many hours on her?

Wow I have never seen a cam bearing failure that peeled out pieces like that. Much less costly to repair that than having a damaged bearing on the crankshaft. Rod.

6500 hr. on the clock. I expect that if we hadn't found this the next symptom would have been a broken camshaft.
