1030 camshaft?

I found a replacement camshaft for my 1030 locally for a good price, assuming it's good. I've asked
around and got different advice from trusted people on whether it needs to be ground before I use it.
One side says yes, grind it and the lifters for a good match, the other side says that's not neccessary
just use it if it's within spec. What do you folks say, if it's in good shape and within specs just use
it? Or always grind them when using one from a different tractor?

Jon i have always been told/taught that good is good to go. If there are no wear marks or grooves I personally would use it. I know youve spent a lot on this tractor and it depends on what you are going to do with it to make your call. if you feel the need to have it reground then by all means have it reground,

Jon, I like Brokenguns theory, good is good. If in doubt have guys at repair or machine shop inspect the cam for their opinion. Check the bottoms of the lifters with a good straight edge, they should all be convex, any flat or concave ones should be reground or replaced. We were always taught never use, used lifters from a different cam as their wear patterns do not match a different used cam. New or reground lifters are OK on a used cam and never use, used lifters on a new cam. Just my 2 cents worth, Rod.

jon , I hope you get all the heavy wt mechanix to chime in ,, it will be interesting ,, but they mite stay quiet at the risk of being sported ,, personally at my farm , I would probably run it ,if,,, it has limited wear . but think about it ,,. . it seems odd to me that some diesels will start in 25 degree weather easily and another exact make and model will not start below 60 degres,,, that goes for all brands ,, but closer examination will prove faulty injectors and or pump , mite have a different setting for ENGINE flywheel AND PUMP TImING ... that is most important ,,. filters too ,,. and finaly the valves must seat rite and open correctly ,,, that's ALSO WHERE A gooD CAM MAKeS A BIG DIFFERRENCE ,if worn on the upside there could be a slight delay on firing ,,,. but what do I know , LOL ..., I am just a farmer that enjoys working them , and provide jobs for GOOD Mechanix who fix my mistakes

I have a question on these camshafts (since I don't know). I recall hearing that reground cams in cars can be a problem if they don't heat treat them again afterward since regrinding may take the surface hardening off the cam. Does this apply to these as well? I don't know if the factory treated them, and/or if the grinders are doing that as well. Just wondering.

Love your daily funnys. On the camshaft, have you ever heard of Berry Cam Service, Lester Prairie, Mn? They used to be excellent for our race car (St. Cloud, Brainerd ect). They do custom grinds for tractor pullers I believe>
