Raking Hay Out West

Even with the drought, there was some good oat hay on the coast of California this year. I can pretty well guarantee this is the only hay to be raked with this combination of equipment!

Yes sir it is, don't know why but old Case tractors are rare out here, case balers and mowers are non-existent, but I would bet 3/4 of the old rakes are Case. This one was from the last dairy in the county and for some reason it got painted Ford blue. I put new teeth on it last year, will get it correctly painted some day.

Was raking hay with a little VAC like that one in my youth, when a large dust devil formed and started right for me. I stopped the tractor just as the dust devil hit me. It raised the hood up and tore it off the tractor, and carried it down the field a ways. I sat there with my mouth hanging open for about fifteen minutes trying to figure out how I was going to round up the hay and put it back into straight windrows.

The photo is taken in the Casserly district of the Pajaro Valley, about 5 miles inland from the Monterey Bay. The tractor itself was purchased used from a dealership in Hollister by my grandfather in 1954.

You said it was painted Ford blue. One of the members in our tractor club had a John Deere plow that he painted the hitch with Farm and Fleet green paint. After about two years it looked like it was paint blue.

Nice pic. And like you said not too often we get to see a tandem like thatworking together in tandem.

Always liked a VAC but never had the opportunity to run one.
