what were the differences between a case 930 and a 930 comfort king? any things to watch out for? i've always had farmalls, but i like the styling of the 30 series cases and have read good things about them. i need another tractor like a hole in the head, but still....

. Bill , the commanding view on a 930 comfort king is awesome , dry clutch , simplicity ,dependable .and the power is stronger than the Case tuf older 6 speed hand wet clutcher 930 that is a real novelty to own . . but oh boy bill,,.are you sure you want to go there /? LOL .. excluding you and me ,, some of those case /ihc fellas are still fumin over the shotgun wedding that happened nearly 30 yrs ago ,,, , but you gotta admit , the offspring has performed wonderfully ,, and my local ihc dealer has welcomed us hard headed case boys with open arms

Don't forget it was not a "merger" or "wedding" IH was dead broke, in bankruptcy, the legal system and the creditors ok'ed the buyout by Case hoping to salvage something......................Another real Case fanatic

Why did you open that can of worms when he wanted to know the difference between early 930 and comfort king? Certainly not the info he was expecting.

Bill,
To answer your question, and I think I touched on this a bit when you were up here last month, there were 3 different series of 930s. The first was basically a redecaled 900. Then The 930 Comfort King tractors were introduced with a reised operator platform, and rear fuel tank. They had a 6spd tranny ans had no 3pt hitch, and most had a hand clutch. What you should be looking for is the later model 930 CK with 8spd and Draft-o-matic 3pt hitch like the cab tractor setting in my yard.
The engine was a 401cu.in 6cyl., rated at 86 pto hp. The tranny was a dual range 8spd. Low range gears 1-4, plus low reverse. High range go back to first in 4spd= 5th gear and back up to 8th, plus high reverse.
The only issues that these tractors had engine wise was created by operator errors overheating, prolonged lugging, ( which the 401 could do) or hot shutdowns. The brakes are dry disc, and you know what they are all about, and the PS is powered by a belt driven of the front of the engine. Not as nice as modern hydrostatic steering. the pto is a multiple wet disc clutch in the rear housing of the tractor and is engaged with a mechanical linkage and if not kept adjusted, the plates will warp and need replaceing.
Parts shouldn't be a big problem, as they were shared in many models over a lot of years.
Hope this info answered your questions. My e-mail is open if you don't still have it, or my ph #

thanks, loren. i haven't seen the 930 yet, but i wanted to have some idea of what i might be looking at.
my 1983 official guide from the farm equipment dlrs assn shows the 930 and 930ck, but the main diff it says seems to be 6 spd vs 8 spd. the guide refers to the 930ck as a 931? will the serial plate say 931? i'm thinking of ones like the fords that had different numbers for different features, all on a ford 800 series for example.

Bill,
As with Ford, the sn# tag tells the story. 931 would be a diesel rowcrop, as the one in my yard. A 932 would be a diesel western, (short wheel base) but had bar rear axles and adjustable front axle, only tucked back under front end of tractor. there were also 941-2s which had a 377cu.in gas or LP engine. There was also a narrow front axle offering which would still be labled as a 31 or 41.
Both the 32s and 31s were popular here in NY. The 32s were tighter turning and more manoverable , but the short wheel base gave them a rough choppy ride and much more engine weight was on the front axle and less on the rear axle, so they had to be weighted differently.

ahhhhhh- the 930 our neighbor had back in the 70s would have been a 932. i remember the short wheelbase. he farmed with a 400 and a 530 when he had 45 cows. then he moved by us and had 90 cows and the 2 smaller tractors couldn't keep up. he kept saying that the first 50 hp was for doing work and the next 50 was for breaking things. lol.

well gene you mite be rite , and your careing thought deserves a response ,, hope you know it was all in fun , Because a few yrs ago , , when Bill came thru corydon ind , with parts for my ihc planter , we talked over dinner at the craker barrel , I learned then and know now , he was raised with ihc , and likewise I was raised with case ,,, we both agreed we appreciate all brands ,, albeit some more than others , LOL , and smile when a brand riot of sorts flare up , and occasionally mite even rib a few on ,,, personaly I try to keep it nice and above board ,, but yes , I have seen some fellas get fiting mad like a 5th grader at recess .. just depends on a fellas passion level and how antagonistic he wants to be ..
