1370 Split .. Yep Twisted Shaft as Rod Predicted

Got the 1370 trans/torque housings to split tonight. Rod, the trick of putting a bottle jack under the drawbar and lifting and waiting a bit worked. I kept four bolts in, two at bottom two at top, each with about 1/4 slop, so nothing could get out of whack when it popped. Sure enough it popped and then we proceeded to split.

Saw the problem right away as we were rolling it apart, the hollow shaft from torque limiter to power shift was twisted off right in front of power shift, which makes total sense, since all hydraulics worked but transmission was not running at all.

Question, is A150144 the right part number for this shaft? Also, when you look at one of the pictures you'll see the gear at front of power shift got a little damage when the hallow shaft twisted. Is that cause for concern, or just leave it as is, no harm? Don't really want to dig into that assembly if I don't have to, but sure don't want to be splitting this again anytime soon.

Thanks for all the help guys. This has actually been a pretty fun project so far .. so far, lol!

Noticed that nick in the gear looked huge on that picture, which was a zoom-in on my camera. This picture shows the scale better. The nick is at the bottom side of the gear in this picture.

There is no reason to be concerned about that nick, Barry. I just marvel when looking at those broken shafts and seeing the similarity in others that have broke. I do not want to complicate or change your mind on the repair you are doing. I have always after having split a 12-1570 made sure the powershift had the square style piston seals and would replace the C2-C3 hub bolts(known to break) and ball brgs on output shaft and planetary in PS just for good measure. All of those procedures do not require a huge amount of money but do leave you with a good piece of mind. And if the tractor is going to only see minimal light drawbar work in the future you probably do not have to be concerned. The items I mentioned were merely done as a precautionary step. Rod.

John in the 40 years I have serviced these tractors I think this is the fourth one I seen broke. Does not occur a lot so hard to pin point a cause. My guess is years of hard jerking up shifts with the powershifts finally causes a sudden failure from fatigue. Rod.

Not a common failure. Can occur on 12's and 13's, I have only seen it broke on 13's so we know hp is a factor. 1570's use a different shaft, Rod.

Shifting powershift lever back w/clutch pedal rather than by hand 1 spd at a time. Very common back in the honey wagon days and now w/grain carts. Road gear with implement behind good way to destroy shaft doing same.

20 years ago, I had a hired man (boy) running the 4690, wide open on the road, 4th & 3rd, string of tools behind, shift from 3rd to 1st. It sheared the splines on the input shaft going into the 4sp gearbox. We have had CASE RPS 34 Power Shift Tractors here for 35 years, and that was the only P/S problem we ever had.

thanks for your reply guys. If Rod has only seen maybe 4 of these in his working life that makes me feel a lot better it also makes me want to make sure i dont keep using the inching pedal to slow down the tractor when i am pulling my 500bu grain cart.
