450 case dozer torque and engine trouble

My 450 dozer is a early 70's and seems to run fine but last week I was pushing dirt and trees and had some problems. The dozer shut down like the motor locked up. I tried to start it and it was very tight like over compression. The only clues I have is that after it sits, it will start and run till the pressure on the torque converter builds, then shuts down again. I also notice a bit of smoke coming under the torque converter. It does not smell like clutch or electrical smoke. I don't know if it has a clutch on the flywheel but everything seems to be turning through the sight holes on both sides. The driveline does turn and turns by hand when not running. I can not get it to move yet. Hydraulic working fine and I've checked and filled all the fluids. Need some help.

I am inclined to think that you have an engine problem, I have never seen a TC unit fail and cause the difficulty you describe and your description is consistent with a bearing seizure problem. If the TC was binding up it should stay bound. I would think if the TC pump was seizing it would destroy itself.

Is the engine vent hose down by the starter, if so vapors from the engine could account for the smoke from that area.

Certainly I could be wrong but my experiences with the TC failing in the manner described hasn't been a issue.

That is not good. I guess I'll pull the pan and take a look. I guess i can pull the pan in frame? I have an extra 188d motor for it. Is it easier to swap motors or fix this if it is a bearing?
